Ebensee concentration camp

Ebensee was a subcamp of Mauthausen concentration camp built near the town of Ebensee in Austria in 1943. Its purpose was to provide slave labour for the construction of large tunnels intended for armaments storage, safe from Allied bombing. The SS used false names like ‘limestone mine’ to hide its true nature. Inmates came from over twenty countries, including Russia, Poland and Spain, with political prisoners forming the majority. Between 8,500 and 11,000 of the 27,278 prisoners died, most from hunger or cold. The camp’s commanders included Georg Bachmeier, Anton Bentele and Otto Riemer, whose brutality led to his demotion. Anton Ganz followed, described by a survivor as ‘brutal, arbitrary and dictatorial’. Prisoners worked up to eleven-hour shifts, often in freezing conditions, while SS guards and Kapos enforced harsh discipline. Companies such as Dywidag and Siemens supervised forced labour, prioritising production over survival. Jewish prisoners faced a death rate of nearly forty per cent, while Spanish inmates had the lowest at less than one per cent. Today a memorial cemetery stands near the former camp site, with residential homes now occupying the original grounds. A memorial tunnel opened in 1994, and the Museum for Contemporary History Ebensee, established in 2001, provides information about the camp’s history. Visitors can walk through the preserved tunnel and view exhibits that document the suffering and liberation of the prisoners. The museum also records oral histories from survivors like Max Moneta and Serge de Moussac. The site serves as a place of remembrance for those who perished and a warning of the consequences of tyranny.
