Glanford Park

Glanford Park stands on the western edge of Scunthorpe, a compact football ground built in 1988 on a greenfield site near the M181 motorway. It replaced the Old Show Ground, the club’s first home since 1899, which had to close after safety rules changed following the Bradford City fire in 1985. The new stadium was the first Football League ground opened in England for 33 years. Princess Alexandra performed the opening ceremony at the start of the 1988–89 season. The name Glanford Park came from the borough council that helped pay for it before North Lincolnshire became a single authority. The ground has seen highs and lows since it opened. Scunthorpe climbed from the fourth tier to League One in 2005 and briefly reached the Championship. Manchester City visited in 2010 and won 4–2, with Robinho scoring his last English goal. The record crowd of 9,086 watched the 2025 play-off final against Chester F.C. The stadium has also been renamed twice for sponsorship, first as the Sands Venue Stadium and now as the Attis Arena. In 2023 it was bought by a community interest company led by local barrister Tahina Akther to keep it in public hands. Inside, four equal-height stands surround the pitch, three fully seated and one terraced. The main stand on the west side holds the tunnel, dugouts and dressing rooms, plus offices, a shop and an injury clinic. The Doncaster Road End is the only terrace and hosts the most vocal fans. Below it sits the Iron Bar, open on match days. The south-west corner now contains the Legends Lounge, while the other three corners hold kiosks. The club’s executive suites, a restaurant and media area sit at the back of the main stand.
