M180 motorway

The M180 is a 41-kilometre motorway in eastern England. It begins at junction five on the M18 near Hatfield in South Yorkshire and ends at Barnetby in Lincolnshire. The road runs close to Scunthorpe, Brigg and the Isle of Axholme. It also passes near Humberside Airport and several oil refineries. The motorway forms part of the unsigned Euroroute E22 and follows the south bank of the Humber Estuary.
The motorway was built in stages during the 1970s. The first section opened in 1977 after the Flixborough explosion highlighted the need for a bypass around Brigg. The final stretch, the Trent viaduct, opened in 1979 after delays caused by strikes and bad weather. Kenneth Clarke opened the viaduct despite it being 43 weeks late. The motorway includes a short-lived spur called the A18(M), now mostly removed.
The M180 meets the M181 at a large trumpet interchange near Scunthorpe. Doncaster North services stand at the western end of the motorway. The A180 continues east from Barnetby to Grimsby and Cleethorpes. The road is mostly straight and flat, built to dual three-lane standard for most of its length.
