M181 motorway

The M181 is a short motorway in North Lincolnshire that links Scunthorpe to the M180. It runs straight for just over a kilometre between the A1077 and A18 at one end and the M180 at the other. The road opened in 1978 as part of a larger route to the east side of the River Trent. A bridge over the river followed a year later. The motorway has no exits along its length and is built to standard British motorway specifications. It carries two lanes in each direction plus a hard shoulder. At the Scunthorpe end there is Gallagher Retail Park and Glanford Park, home of Scunthorpe United Football Club. Plans approved in 2019 will add a roundabout at the B1450 Burringham Road. Work on the new junction began in 2020 and will change how the motorway ends. The southern section will become part of the M180 access slips while the northern section will become the A1077. A second roundabout is planned at the southern end to complete the change.
