Weem Castle

Weem Castle stands on a rise above the village of Weem in Perth and Kinross, close to the larger Castle Menzies. Its position commands views over the River Tay and the surrounding Strath of Weem. The site was chosen for its natural prominence and strategic outlook. The Menzies family made it their main residence after their previous stronghold at Comrie was damaged by fire. A single tower once rose from the ruins, marking the spot where the castle stood. The castle’s brief life ended in 1502 when Nigel Stewart of Garth attacked it during a feud over land called Fothergill. Within days the structure was dismantled, its stone and timber taken to build Castle Menzies a mile away. Archaeologists have found traces of the tower’s foundations and the robber trenches where the stone was removed. Visitors today walk a farm track that passes the low grassy mound of the former castle. A modern fence outlines the footprint of the tower, and a small information board explains what once stood there. The view south across the Tay valley remains much as it was when the Menzies lords looked out from their home.
