Farragon Hill

Farragon Hill rises above the moorland between Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon in Perth and Kinross. It is a grassy dome topped by a small cairn, one of many such hills in the Scottish Highlands. The hill sits on private land, yet walkers follow old stalkers’ paths that lead straight to the summit. From the top the view stretches north-west to Schiehallion and south-east towards the Grampians. The hill is counted among Scotland’s Marilyns, Corbetts and HuMPs. Marilyns are hills with a relative height of at least 150 metres, Corbetts are Scottish peaks between 2,500 and 3,000 feet, and HuMPs are hills whose highest point is at least 100 metres above the surrounding land. Organisations such as the Database of British and Irish Hills keep these lists up to date. A visitor reaches the summit after a steady climb of about 300 metres. The final slope is gentle, marked only by a few scattered stones. At the top the wide horizon shows the rolling hills of Atholl and the distant peaks of the Central Highlands. The silence is broken only by the wind and the occasional call of a raven.
