Binnein Mòr

Binnein Mòr stands in the Mamores range, a chain of mountains between Glen Nevis and Loch Leven in the Scottish Highlands. It is the highest peak in the Mamores, reaching above the empty upper part of Glen Nevis north of the main ridge. The summit is a sharp pyramid that rises above steep slopes. A narrow ridge on the south side connects to the main ridge at a lower top listed as Binnein Mòr south top. Two kilometres southeast, Sgòr Eilde Beag forms the eastern end of the main ridge at 956 metres. The mountain is not climbed as often as others because it lies further from roads and villages. Most walkers start from Kinlochleven, a village at the head of Loch Leven. The route usually goes up through the Allt na h-Uamhaidh burn and over the south ridge. Many combine the climb with Na Gruagaichean, the next peak to the west, to make a longer day on the hills. On the summit ridge there are patches of quartzite that catch the light on clear days. The view stretches north to Ben Nevis and south across Rannoch Moor. The ridge itself is narrow and rocky, with drops on either side. Below, the upper Glen Nevis glen shows steep grass and scree slopes. The air is thin and the wind often strong, so the climb needs steady boots and a good map.
