Stob Coire a' Chàirn

Stob Coire a’ Chàirn is a mountain in the Mamores range, 3.5 kilometres north of Kinlochleven in the Highlands. It stands at 981 metres and is one of the ten Munros in the group, though it was unnamed on Ordnance Survey maps for many years. The name comes from the Gaelic for ‘Peak of the Corrie of the Cairn’. Three ridges stretch from the summit to other Munros, making it a central point in the range. The mountain is best known as part of the Ring of Steall, one of Scotland’s finest ridge walks. This route also includes the Munros An Gearanach, Am Bodach and Sgurr a’ Mhàim. A well-graded stalkers path leads up Coire na Ba on the southern flank, offering easy access to the Mamores ridge. The Coire na Ba is drained by the Allt Coire na Ba, which flows south to join the River Leven at Kinlochleven. The direct ascent starts at Kinlochleven and follows the stalkers path to the east ridge, which leads to the summit. The top is marked by a rough cairn and offers views of Glen Coe and its surrounding hills. Climbers often combine Stob Coire a’ Chàirn with other Munros in the group, as its position makes it a useful hub for longer routes.
