Royal Victoria Dock Bridge

The Royal Victoria Dock Bridge is a high-level footbridge crossing the Royal Victoria Dock in east London’s Docklands. Designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, it links Eastern Quay and Britannia Village to the ExCeL Exhibition Centre and Custom House station. The bridge’s form echoes the masts of sailing boats that use the dock, with six masts rising above the deck at 25.5-metre centres. The tallest masts reach almost 30 metres while the smallest stand just over 10 metres high. It spans the dock with a clearance of about 15 metres above the water to allow yachts to pass beneath. Access is by stairs at each end, as lifts were removed after persistent reliability problems. The bridge was completed in 1998 at a cost of £5 million. Its inverted Fink truss design was chosen to reflect the dock’s maritime heritage. The structure’s six masts vary in height to create a distinctive profile across the water. The clearance above the dock was set to accommodate the tallest yachts using the basin. Stairs at both ends provide the only current means of access after the removal of the lifts. Plans once existed to add a glass passenger cabin running on a rail beneath the deck, but no timeline has been set for this second stage. Visitors cross a deck supported by the truss and masts, gaining views over the dock and surrounding Docklands. The bridge’s design makes it a landmark for those walking between Eastern Quay and ExCeL. The changing heights of the masts create a rhythmic pattern against the skyline. The clear span above the water ensures unobstructed passage for vessels below. The absence of lifts means the climb is unavoidable for anyone using the bridge. Its 1998 completion marked a step in connecting the area’s residential and exhibition spaces.
