NHS Nightingale Hospital London

The NHS Nightingale Hospital London was a temporary hospital set up in the ExCeL London convention centre in the London Borough of Newham. It was the first of several Nightingale Hospitals created by NHS England during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hospital was planned and built quickly, opening on 3 April 2020 and admitting its first patients four days later. It was run by NHS staff and volunteers, with support from 700 military personnel. The facility was designed to treat patients already on ventilators, with a capacity of up to 150 patients per day. The hospital’s rapid construction and operation reflected the urgent need for extra critical care during the pandemic. Named after Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, it was intended as a safeguard against overwhelming existing hospitals. During its first wave, it treated only 54 patients, as permanent hospitals had already expanded their intensive care capacity. Later, it reopened to help with non-COVID patients and to provide COVID-19 vaccinations during the second wave. The hospital closed permanently in April 2021. Visitors to the site would have found a large, purpose-built medical facility inside the ExCeL centre. The hospital was managed by Barts Health NHS Trust, with Charles Knight serving as its CEO. The building included areas for patient care, staff offices, and logistics support provided by the military. The hospital’s design allowed for efficient patient flow, with space to receive and discharge up to 150 patients daily. Though its time in operation was brief, it remains a notable example of how the NHS adapted during the pandemic.
