Burg Großer Felsen

The Burg Großer Felsen stands as a ruined spur castle on a rocky outcrop 650 metres north-east of Schloss Langenstein near Orsingen-Nenzingen in the district of Konstanz. The site overlooks the surrounding countryside from its elevated position. The remains include a rampart 57 metres long, 10 metres wide and 1.5 metres high. A defensive ditch also survives intact. The ruins date from the early medieval period and once protected the local area. They offer a rare glimpse into the region’s early fortification systems. Archaeologists recognise the site as part of a wider network of defences built across central Europe. Research by Hansjürgen Brachmann highlights its significance in early medieval studies. Visitors find a quiet hilltop with stone fragments scattered among grass and low shrubs. The rampart and ditch are still clearly visible. The view stretches over fields and woodland towards the nearby Bodensee. The site is reached by a short walk from the car park below the castle hill.
