Burg Kirnberg

Burg Kirnberg once stood on the Kirnberg massif, a 585-metre hill 1,500 metres south of Orsingen church. The site belongs to Orsingen-Nenzingen in the district of Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg. It was a small hilltop fortress built to control the surrounding land. Only faint traces of its walls and ditches remain today. Archaeologists have studied the remains in detail. Michael Losse’s 2012 book on castles near the Bodensee describes the site. Earlier work by Hans-Wilhelm Heine also records its features. The ruins show how medieval builders used the hill’s natural slope for defence. The walls once enclosed a modest courtyard and a single tower. No buildings survive above ground, yet the earthworks still mark the original shape. The site lies within a quiet stretch of countryside near the northern shore of the Bodensee. Its modest size reflects the limited resources of its builders in the Middle Ages. The location offered clear views over the valley below. Visitors walk up a gentle path to the hilltop where the castle once stood. The remaining ramparts form low grassy banks around the summit. From there the Alps can be seen on clear days. The surrounding beech woods add to the peaceful atmosphere. The site is quiet, with few other visitors. It offers a chance to imagine the fortress that once commanded the view.
