Reute Castle in the Hegau

Burg Reute stands in the Hegau region of southern Baden-Württemberg, about 1.3 kilometres south-west of the village of Reute. It was once a circular rampart fortification built on a gentle slope above the Krebsbach valley. The site shows no visible remains above ground today, but aerial surveys in the 1990s revealed traces of a ditch and bank forming a circle roughly 100 to 120 metres wide. Archaeologists believe the builders were the lords of Honstetten, a local noble family of the late medieval period.

The fortification’s design is unusual for a castle, as the ground falls away gradually rather than offering a steep defensive drop. Experts suggest this made the position less secure than typical hilltop castles of the same era. Despite its historical importance, the spot carries no signage to guide visitors, leaving the landscape to speak for itself. The site lies close to the Burgenweg trail, which links many castles in the western Bodensee area.

Visitors reach the field by following quiet rural paths from Reute village. From the plateau, the land slopes gently down to the Krebsbach stream below, offering wide views across open meadows and distant wooded hills. The absence of modern intrusions lets the ancient earthworks blend into the natural setting. Walkers on the Burgenweg often pass nearby without noticing the buried remains, yet the site remains a quiet reminder of the region’s medieval past.
