Coburger Hütte

The Coburger Hut stands in the Mieming Range of the Austrian Alps, a few metres above the Drachensee lake. Owned by the Coburg Branch of the German Alpine Club, the hut sits at an altitude reached by several demanding paths. It was first proposed in 1890 by Munich alpinist Ferdinand Kilger and completed in 1901. Over the decades it has been extended, modernised, and equipped with new facilities. The hut is worth the journey for experienced walkers seeking high routes. The Hoher Gang path from Ehrwald requires sure-footedness and a head for heights, protected only in places by cable. The Seeben Klettersteig, graded D+, follows exposed terrain along the Gaißbach stream. Easier options include the Ehrwalder Alm path, which uses the Ehrwalder Almbahn lift to gain height before a gentle zigzag road to the hut. Inside, visitors find a renovated interior with a seminar room and modern services. Outside, the surroundings offer views of the Drachensee lake and nearby peaks. Two climbing gardens lie close by, one with ten routes and another with five harder climbs. The hut also serves as a starting point for crossings to other alpine huts and summits such as the Vorderer Tajakopf.
