Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze

The Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze is a 2,417-metre mountain in the Mieming Chain of the Austrian Alps. It stands south of Ehrwald village, with Biberwier to the west and the Seebensee lake to the east. The Signalgipfel, a 2,412-metre subpeak, lies to the south. The Biberwierer Scharte col at 2,000 metres separates it from the higher Wampeter Schrofen. The mountain is one of the most popular climbs in the range. The normal route starts from the Coburger Hut at 1,917 metres. It follows a marked but exposed path up the south side, graded UIAA II and equipped with anchors and pitons. The final ridge to the summit cross is narrow and very exposed, so a good head for heights is needed. An alternative route leaves from Seebensee along the northeast ridge, also graded II in places and well marked in sections. Both routes are protected with new belays. At the top stands a summit cross, reached after crossing the exposed ridge. The views extend over the Mieming Chain and the Zugspitze massif to the north. The Coburger Hut provides a base for the climb, while Seebensee offers a scenic starting point. The routes are marked and secured, but navigation skills remain important where waymarks are hard to spot. The mountain’s south arête and west face also attract climbers seeking longer routes.
