Riegelkopf

The Riegelkopf is a mountain peak in the Schobergruppe range of East Tirol, Austria. It stands at 2,713 metres above sea level near the western edge of the range. The summit lies on the border between the municipalities of Kals am Großglockner to the north and St. Johann im Walde to the south. Two other peaks, the Kegelstein and the Kreuzspitze, stand nearby, marking the limits of the Riegelkopf’s ridge. The mountain is rarely visited, making it a quiet destination for those seeking solitude. The usual route starts in the village of Oberleibnig and passes the Oblaßer Alm before reaching the Leibnigbach valley. From there, walkers follow the South Ridge to the summit. The descent offers views over the Kalser Tal to the northwest and the Iseltal to the south. On clear days, the Riegelkopf provides wide views across the Schobergruppe. The South Ridge drops steeply toward the Iseltal, where the Leibnigbach begins its course. To the northwest, the Bosling marks the end of the North-West Ridge before the land falls into the Kalser Tal. The contrast between the quiet slopes and the distant peaks makes the climb worthwhile.
