Kreuzegg

The Kreuzegg rises in the Schobergruppe, a high chain in East Tyrol. It stands at the end of a long north-west ridge that drops from the Hochschobers 3 242-metre summit. The mountain’s name marks the crossing point where the ridge turns south-west toward the Fallwindeskogel before falling into the Kalser valley. Climbers choose the Kreuzegg for its quiet routes and varied ground. The normal way leaves Elleparte, a hamlet below Unterlesach, and climbs past the Fallwindeshütte along the Fallwindesbach stream. After the hut the valley narrows into a trough rarely visited except by hunters. A broad scree basin leads to a broad scree slope and then to an unnamed col between Kreuzegg and Winkelegg. The final climb follows the connecting ridge in easy scrambling. From the Staniska Alm a shorter route uses the south-west ridge graded II. Both paths end on a narrow summit ridge with views across the Schobergruppe’s peaks. The surrounding troughs channel streams that feed the Staniskabach and Fallwindesbach. The isolation and the sharp ridges give the Kreuzegg its character among the high summits of East Tyrol.
