Kegelstein

The Kegelstein is a mountain summit in the Schobergruppe range of East Tyrol. It stands at the western edge of the group, where the Hochschober-Westkamm ends near the border between Kals am Großglockner and St. Johann im Walde. The peak rises between the Riegelkopf to the northeast and the Zirmstein to the west. Steep slopes drop northwards into the Leportenbach valley and southwards towards the Leibniger Alpl and the Leibnigbach. The normal route to the Kegelstein starts in the village of Oberleibnig and passes the Oblaßer Alm. Walkers then head east into the Leibnigbach valley before climbing the Leibniger Alpl to reach the southern ridge and the summit. The route is little used, making the peak a quiet destination. From the top, the view extends across the Schobergruppe and beyond. The steep faces on either side show the rugged nature of the range. The route offers a chance to see alpine meadows and high pastures along the way. The isolation of the Kegelstein adds to the sense of discovery for those who reach it.
