Generali Ladies Linz

The Linz Open is a WTA 500 tennis tournament held in Linz, Upper Austria. Since 2026 it will be played on indoor clay courts, having switched from indoor hardcourts in 2025. The event began in 1987 in nearby Wels as a $10,000 ITF tournament before moving to Linz in 1991. It started as a Tier V WTA Tour event, rising to Tier III in 1993 and Tier II in 1998. In 2009 it became a WTA International Tournament and in 2021 a WTA 250 before the 2024 upgrade to WTA 500 status. Generali Gruppe sponsored the event from 1999 to 2017. The tournament has attracted former world number ones such as Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Amélie Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic. More recent singles champions include Petra Kvitová, Victoria Azarenka, Angelique Kerber, Karolína Plíšková and Dominika Cibulková. The schedule changed in 2023, moving from October to February. Visitors find a professional tennis event with singles and doubles matches on indoor courts in Linz. The atmosphere reflects the city’s sporting culture, drawing international players and fans. The tournament’s progression through different tiers shows its growing stature in women’s tennis. Matches provide close competition across the week-long event.
