Burg Entenburg

The Burg Entenburg stands near the Danube in Pfohren, a village on the edge of the Black Forest. It was built before 1471 by Count Heinrich VI of Fürstenberg as a water castle with four corner towers and a square plan. The name Entenburg is said to come from Emperor Maximilian I, who stayed there in 1471 and gave it that title. The castle is worth visiting for its long history and royal connections. Emperor Maximilian I visited twice, once in 1471 and again in 1510, signing documents there. After 1567 it became a tithe barn, and in 1871 it was rebuilt. The building was carefully restored between 1987 and 1989 by Ralf and Anne Röver with advice from the Freiburg Monument Authority. Visitors find a well-preserved square castle with the remains of its towers and a dry moat. The interior once housed an antiquarian bookshop. The building remains in private hands and shows the careful work of its restorers. The old appearance has been kept, even if the four separate towers shown in old pictures may never have existed.
