Burg Aasen

The Burg Aasen is a ruined motte-and-bailey castle near the village of Aasen, a district of Donaueschingen in the Black Forest–Baar district of Baden-Württemberg. It was built by the lords of Aasen and first recorded in 1094. All that remains today is the earthen mound topped by a stone cross. The site is small but historically important, marking the early medieval presence of the Aasen family. The single surviving feature, the mound, still shows the outline of the wooden tower that once stood there. Archaeologists recognise it as a typical example of a Salian-period motte. Visitors find a quiet grassy knoll beside a minor road. A simple stone cross marks the highest point of the old tower mound. The surrounding farmland and distant woods give a sense of the castle’s original setting in the rolling countryside.
