Hoftheater Donaueschingen

The Hoftheater in Donaueschingen was a court theatre built by the Princes of Fürstenberg in 1774. It occupied the former riding school in the town centre. The building hosted plays and operas until it burned down on 28 April 1850. Two notable conductors worked there: Konradin Kreutzer and Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda. Their leadership shaped the theatre’s repertoire in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The theatre played a key role in the cultural life of the small principality. Performances attracted visitors from nearby towns and beyond. The building itself was a simple rectangular hall with wooden galleries. After the fire, the site was cleared and later used for other purposes. Today only historical records and a 1904 study by Georg Tumbült remain. The former location lies near the present-day town hall. Visitors can still sense the cultural importance of the place. A plaque marks the spot where the theatre once stood.
