Fürstenberg Castle
Fürstenberg Castle stands on a hill in the Baar region near Hüfingen in Baden-Württemberg. The House of Zähringen owned it when it was first mentioned in 1175. After the Zähringers died out in the late 12th century, Count Henry of Urach took over and made the castle his home. He became the first to use the title Count of Fürstenberg. The castle was badly damaged during the Thirty Years’ War and never restored. The ruins show parts of the old keep and the surrounding walls. Visitors can walk among the stone foundations and see where the great hall once stood. The hilltop offers wide views over the Baar plain and the Black Forest in the distance. The castle’s name still marks the spot where the counts once ruled. The site is quiet now, with only the wind and birds breaking the silence. A short climb from Hüfingen brings walkers to the hill where the castle once defended the land. The ruins recall a time when counts and knights lived and fought here centuries ago.
