Schlenken

The Schlenken is a 1,648-metre mountain in the Osterhorngruppe range near Salzburg. It lies on the border between the districts of Hallein and Salzburg, with its slopes divided between Bad Vigaun, Krispl and Adnet. The mountain’s distinctive shape, resembling an extinct volcano, is visible from far away. Its summit marks the boundary between Krispl and Bad Vigaun. The Schmittenstein peak nearby adds to the dramatic skyline. The Schlenken attracts walkers, skiers and paragliders because of its proximity to Salzburg. Eleven alpine pastures and huts dot the area, four of which serve food and drink. Among its natural features are about twenty-five caves, the most famous being the Schlenken Durchgangshöhle. The mountain’s volcanic appearance and network of paths draw visitors throughout the year. Paths lead through forests and open meadows to sweeping views of the surrounding valleys. The four working huts offer rest and refreshment after the climb. Paragliders launch from the ridges on calm days, while skiers follow tracks in winter. The contrast between steep rock faces and gentle slopes makes the Schlenken a varied destination for outdoor activity.
