Schlenken-Durchgangshöhle

The Schlenken Durchgangshöhle is a cave on the Schlenken in the Osterhorngruppe near Bad Vigaun in Salzburg. It sits at 1,580 metres above sea level beneath a steep rock face. The cave is about 130 metres long and has been explored for its archaeological treasures. Archaeologists found cave bear bones and stone and bone tools made by Neanderthals inside the cave. These finds link the site to the Middle Palaeolithic period. The cave’s contents have been recorded in the Salzburger Höhlenbuch and Reclams Archäologie Führer Österreich und Südtirol. Visitors reach the cave along mountain paths that climb through alpine meadows and rocky terrain. The entrance is framed by rugged cliffs and offers a view of the surrounding Hochgolling massif. Inside, the cave floor is uneven and requires care to walk. The cave’s cool, damp air and dim light create a quiet, ancient atmosphere.
