Schmittenstein

The Schmittenstein is a 1,695-metre peak in the Osterhorngruppe range, part of the Salzkammergut mountains in Salzburg. It stands on the border between the villages of Sankt Koloman and Krispl. From a distance its sharp outline rises beside the Schlenken, forming a striking pair of summits. The mountain’s proximity to Salzburg makes it a popular choice for hikers and ski tourers. Its steep slopes and clear air draw climbers in every season. The easiest routes start from the Schlenkenalm or Tenneralm alpine pastures, gentle grassy tracks that suit most walkers. A short scramble is needed from the Schlenkengipfel, while the route from the Sattel col is longer and more exposed. Four of the main paths share a narrow ledge north of the summit that can remain blocked by snow until late spring. The southern route from Schlenksteinalm avoids this hazard but is unmarked and poorly maintained. At the top a small summit cross marks the highest point above rolling green hills and distant valleys. On clear days the view stretches to the Dachstein glacier and the peaks of the Hohe Tauern. The alpine meadows below are dotted with cattle in summer, and the air carries the scent of wild thyme. Returning walkers often stop at the Schlenkenalm for fresh milk and homemade cheese before the final descent.
