Adelaide Cottage

Adelaide Cottage stands in Windsor Home Park, just east of Windsor Castle in Berkshire. Built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, it was originally called Adelaide Lodge. The house incorporates materials from John Nash’s Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park. Queen Victoria often visited for breakfast and tea. Later, Group Captain Peter Townsend lived there as a grace-and-favour residence. The cottage has four bedrooms, including a principal room with decorative elements reused from the royal yacht HMY Royal George. Its regency Graeco-Egyptian marble fireplace mantel and gilt dolphins and ropes add historic charm. The building was listed Grade II* in 1975. Simon Rhodes, a relative of Queen Elizabeth II, once resided there. Major renovations in 2015 preserved its historical architecture. Visitors find a modest but elegant house set in the park’s quiet surroundings. The cottage’s two public rooms and retiring room reflect its royal past. Decorative details from earlier royal properties remain visible inside. The park’s open landscape offers peaceful walks near Windsor Castle. The cottage’s simple elegance contrasts with the grandeur of the castle nearby.
