The Royal Mausoleum

The Royal Mausoleum stands on the Frogmore estate within Windsor’s Home Park. It is a Grade I-listed building designed as a final resting place for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Construction began in March 1862 and took nearly a decade to complete, with the dome raised by October of the first year. The interior was consecrated in December 1862, though decoration continued until 1871. Built in the Romanesque style, it takes the form of a Greek cross with a central octagon rising 70 feet. Portland stone and granite form the walls, topped by an Australian copper roof. The mausoleum is recognised as the finest example of Victorian funerary architecture in Britain. Nikolaus Pevsner’s Buildings of England series describes it as such. Victoria and Albert funded the entire £200,000 cost from their private resources. It contains monuments to their daughter Princess Alice and a central memorial to Victoria’s father, the Duke of Kent. A bronze Latin inscription above the door reflects Victoria’s grief and devotion. The interior blends High Renaissance style with marbles from Portugal, Italy, and beyond. Inside, visitors find a richly decorated chapel with three chapels depicting scenes from Christ’s life. The centrepiece is a massive granite sarcophagus holding the effigies of Victoria and Albert. The marble figures show Albert in Field Marshal uniform and Victoria in regal attire. Bronze angels kneel at each corner of the sarcophagus, cast by a Parisian foundry. The stained glass once featured Saxe-Coburg crests and angels playing instruments, later renewed under Edward VII. Though closed for restoration since 2007, the building remains a solemn tribute to a royal couple’s enduring legacy.
