Frogmore Estate

Frogmore is a private estate of 33 acres within Home Park, next to Windsor Castle in Berkshire. It contains Frogmore House, a royal retreat, and Frogmore Cottage. The gardens are Grade I listed and hold three burial places for British royalty. The name comes from the many frogs once found in the marshy land beside the River Thames. The estate became a royal retreat in the 18th century when George III bought it for Queen Charlotte. She worked with James Wyatt to redesign the house and gardens. Later Queen Victoria used Frogmore as her peaceful retreat, adding a teahouse and restoring the Gothic Ruin. She placed the Indian Kiosk in the gardens and often wrote letters in a tent nearby. Visitors find Frogmore House and its landscaped gardens. The Gothic Ruin, Queen Victoria’s Teahouse and the Indian Kiosk stand among the paths. The Royal Mausoleum holds Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The Duchess of Kent’s Mausoleum and the Royal Burial Ground lie nearby, with graves of other royals.
