Home Park

Home Park lies on the eastern side of Windsor Castle and covers 2.65 square kilometres of private royal grounds. It is separated from the larger Windsor Great Park by Albert Road and is managed by the Crown Estate. The park contains farmland where cattle graze, a golf course, bowling green, cricket field and tennis courts. Adelaide Cottage stands on the site of the old Keeper’s Lodge, while Shaw Farm and the Windsor Farm Shop operate nearby. Frogmore Estate sits within the park, featuring Frogmore House, gardens, Frogmore Cottage and a large lake. The park has a long history as a royal hunting ground. King Edward III first emparked part of the area in 1368 for deer hunting, and it appears in Shakespeare’s *The Merry Wives of Windsor*. Oliver Cromwell trained his New Model Army here in the 17th century. George III removed the deer in 1785, and the modern boundaries were set by Acts of Parliament in the 19th century. The Royal Windsor Horse Show and Windsor Rose Show are held here each year. Visitors can walk through parkland, avenues of fine trees and formal gardens. The Royal Mausoleum and the Royal Burial Ground lie within the grounds, as does the grave of Queen Victoria’s spaniel, Dash. Frogmore House and its gardens open to the public on selected days, offering views of the lake and surrounding landscape. The park’s farmland and sporting facilities provide a contrast to its historic and landscaped areas.
