Cultural heritage D-2-7540-0189 in Bodenkirchen

Schloss Hilling was a vanished medieval castle in Bodenkirchen, Lower Bavaria. It stood on a triangle of land formed by today’s village street and Brunnholzstraße, close to the little river Bina. The site is now levelled earthworks, but it is protected as a scheduled monument. Written records show a wooden manor house, farm buildings and a court of law once stood here. Six farmsteads clustered around the castle in the 18th century. The place matters because it links several noble families to Bavarian history. Erasmus Rheinthaler bought the seat in 1394 for 500 gulden. The Hohenthanners held it from 1443 to 1558, when it passed to Thomas Schönbrunner. Later owners included Wilhelm Lunghammer, Johann Georg Hufnagel and the Feury family. In 1866 the last buildings were demolished, leaving only the Schlossbauernhof. Visitors today see a quiet farmyard where the castle once stood. The broad pond that once surrounded the house has gone, but the triangle of land is still visible. Nearby farm buildings recall the seven holdings listed in 1790. The site is open ground, so there are no walls or towers to explore. Instead, the interest lies in the low earthworks and the knowledge of who once lived and ruled here.
