Cultural heritage D-2-7540-0172 in Bodenkirchen

Neuaich was a small medieval castle near Aich in Bodenkirchen, Lower Bavaria. It stood 280 metres west of St Ulrich’s parish church, beside the road from Landshut. The site is listed as a protected archaeological monument, showing traces of the main building and its outhouses from the Middle Ages and early modern period. A second noble residence was founded here in 1483, making it the newer of two such seats in the village. The castle’s origins are unclear. A charter from 1291 mentions a local noble named Rudegerus de Eich, though it is not certain whether this refers to Neuaich, Niederaich or another place nearby. By 1390 Wilhelm Reickher lived in Aich, and in the mid-15th century his family built the new seat called Neuenaich. A church was erected beside the Bina stream, where marble tombstones still mark the Reickher family vault. Later owners included Joseph Franz von Eisenreich, a court chamberlain, who acquired the site in 1606. Today only the grassy rise and a few low earthworks remain where the castle once stood. The Bina flows past the site, and the church of St Ulrich overlooks the spot. A local inn, the Grubwinkler, occupies part of the old estate grounds. Visitors can walk the quiet lanes of Aich and see the church with its Reickher memorials, while the castle’s buried foundations lie just beyond the graveyard wall.
