Meall a' Choire Léith

Meall a’ Choire Lèith is a 926-metre Munro in Perthshire, standing at the north-western edge of the ridge that runs along Loch Tay’s northern shore. Its Gaelic name means ‘hill of the grey corrie’, and it is separated from the main Ben Lawers group by Coire a’ Chobhair, a glen that drains north towards Glen Lyon. The mountain shares a broad, gently sloping summit plateau with its southern neighbour Meall Corranaich, connected by a flat col just above 770 metres. Only on the northern side does the ridge turn rocky, ending in the steep crags of Sron Eich above Glen Lyon. Seven peaks along this ridge are classified as Munros, with Ben Lawers itself the highest. The mountain attracts Munro-baggers who combine it with Meall Corranaich, climbing over the grassy col between the two tops. A direct route starts from the narrow road linking Loch Tay and Glen Lyon, beside the small Lochan na Lairige reservoir. Walkers then follow the western flanks up to the summit plateau. The flat, grassy dome offers wide views across Loch Tay and the surrounding glens, with the peaks of the Ben Lawers range rising to the south-east. The contrast between the gentle slopes and the dramatic northern crags makes the route varied and interesting. At the summit there is little to mark the highest point except a small cairn on the grassy plateau. The broad dome allows space for many walkers to spread out and enjoy the outlook without crowding. To the north-west the eye follows the deep trench of Glen Lyon, while to the east the long ribbon of Loch Tay stretches towards Kenmore. The ridge continues south-east towards Ben Lawers, giving a sense of height and distance on clear days. The mountain’s quiet position away from the main group adds to its appeal for those seeking a less crowded Munro.
