Beinn Ghlas

Beinn Ghlas stands in the Breadalbane region of the Scottish Highlands, on the north shore of Loch Tay. It belongs to the Ben Lawers Range and reaches 1,103 metres. The mountain’s Gaelic name means ‘grey-green mountain’, describing the mica-schist rock that covers much of its slopes. This rock often contains large garnets visible in outcrops along the path. The south-western side shows heavy scree where the schist breaks away. The usual route to the summit starts from the car park and follows Edramucky Burn. It then climbs to the south-western ridge, offering steady progress without technical difficulty. To the north lies Coire Odhar, a deep corrie with a dun-coloured appearance. Walkers heading on to Ben Lawers can save energy by taking the path west of the summit down into Coire Odhar, avoiding a 100-metre re-ascent of Beinn Ghlas. On the way up, the path passes outcrops of mica-schist that reveal shiny garnets embedded in the rock. The summit provides wide views over Loch Tay and the surrounding ranges. The contrast between the grey-green schist and the red garnets adds colour to the climb. The route is well marked and used by many Munro-baggers seeking a straightforward but rewarding ascent.
