An Stùc

An Stùc is a cone-shaped mountain in the Ben Lawers range north of Loch Tay. Its Gaelic name means ‘The Peak’. It became a Munro in 1997 after earlier being treated as a subsidiary top of Ben Lawers. The mountain sits on the main ridge and its southern and eastern slopes belong to the Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve. The National Trust for Scotland owns and manages this protected area. The usual ways up are along the ridges from Ben Lawers or Meall Garbh, often combined with other peaks. A direct route also starts from the Lawers Burn to the east, following a gully above Lochan nan Cat. Another hill called An Stùc stands in Assynt, 26 kilometres northeast of Ullapool at the head of Glenoykel. On the slopes hikers find open grassland and rocky outcrops typical of the reserve. Views stretch across Loch Tay to the south and the wider Grampian Mountains. The clear summit offers a rounded cone that shows why the mountain earned its name.
