Meall Garbh

Meall Garbh is a mountain in the southern part of the Scottish Highlands. It stands at the north-eastern end of the Ben Lawers range, alongside Meall Greigh. The craggy south face of the mountain overlooks Lochan nan Cat, a small loch below. The A827 road is the usual starting point for ascents. The Lawers Burn flows from the mountain, guiding many walkers towards Lochan nan Cat. The mountain is often climbed in conjunction with Meall Greigh, with the latter usually tackled first. A direct ascent of Meall Garbh is possible by branching northeast from the path near abandoned shielings. Alternatively, the route can be used for descent after climbing Meall Greigh. The mountain also forms part of longer traverses of the Ben Lawers range, which may include up to seven Munros. A visitor finds a rugged landscape with sweeping views across the Highlands. The path along the Lawers Burn leads to Lochan nan Cat, a peaceful spot surrounded by hills. The abandoned shielings along the route hint at the area’s past use for summer grazing. The summit of Meall Garbh offers panoramic views of the surrounding Munros. The National Trust for Scotland visitor centre marks the end of some routes, providing a place to rest.
