40 Bank Street

40 Bank Street stands in Heron Quays, part of London’s Docklands. It overlooks the London Docklands from its position in the Borough of Tower Hamlets. The skyscraper rises 153 metres across 30 floors, with a total floor area of 58,900 square metres. It was designed by Cesar Pelli & Associates and built by Canary Wharf Contractors in 2003. The executive architect was Adamson Associates. The building is the 38th tallest in London and the 43rd tallest in the United Kingdom. The tower is the most slender of three speculative buildings on Heron Quays, alongside 25 Bank Street and One Churchill Place. Its modernist design features uniformly spaced windows set in a light-coloured stone facade. A glass section runs along the side and top, creating the impression of two fused structures. The recessed windows give the illusion of hollow openings in certain light. The proportions of the curtain wall emphasise the building’s height. Inside, 40 Bank Street connects to Jubilee Place, an underground shopping mall. The lobby was renovated between 2020 and 2023 with security upgrades. The building has housed major tenants such as Allen & Overy and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. Citibank became its first fully-fitted office customer in 2022. HVIVO signed a ten-year lease for 3,627.8 square metres in 2023. HSBC will occupy 11 floors from 2027.
