Citigroup Centre

The Citigroup Centre stands in Canary Wharf, part of London’s Docklands in the Borough of Tower Hamlets. It is a complex of two modern office towers, 33 Canada Square and 25 Canada Square (also called Citi Tower). The taller tower rises 200 metres across 45 storeys and was completed in 2001. César Pelli & Associates designed the main structure, with Adamson Associates acting as executive architect. The smaller building, 33 Canada Square, is 105 metres high and has eighteen floors, designed by Norman Foster and finished in 1999. The complex houses Citigroup’s EMEA headquarters and most of its 9,000 UK staff. In 2004 the tower was bought for $1.12 billion by the Royal Bank of Scotland alongside another building. Later, in 2007, it was sold again for £1 billion before Citigroup re-purchased it in 2019 for £1.2 billion. A £100 million refurbishment was announced in 2022, adding parent rooms, prayer rooms and green spaces including a winter garden. By 2025 costs had risen to over £1 billion and work began in July 2023. Visitors reach the centre through main entrances on Canada Square and Upper Bank Street. Underground walkways link it to Canada Place shopping mall and Canary Wharf Underground station on the Jubilee line. The Docklands Light Railway serves nearby stations at Canary Wharf and Heron Quays, offering connections across the city and to London City Airport. Inside, the east side of the tower up to level 40 is set aside for tenant use. The refurbished spaces will provide modern amenities while keeping the tower’s commanding presence in the Docklands skyline.
