Penderyn Distillery

Penderyn Distillery stands in the village of Penderyn within the Cynon Valley, part of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales. It is the first commercial whisky distillery in Wales since the 19th century, reviving a tradition that had ceased in 1894. The company was founded in 2000 as the Welsh Whisky Company and began whisky production in 2004. It produces single malt whisky in several expressions, including Madeira Finish, Peated, Sherrywood and Portwood. The distillery also makes other spirits such as Merlyn Cream Liqueur, Five Vodka and Brecon Gin, which won Gold Best in Class at an international competition. The original distillery opened a visitors centre in 2008, with Charles, then Prince of Wales, attending the launch. Over 35,000 people visit the centre each year. In 2021, a second distillery opened in Llandudno on the site of a former school, and a third distillery was established in Swansea in 2023. Penderyn’s whiskies and spirits are sold internationally in markets including Taiwan, Australia, France and the USA. Visitors to Penderyn Distillery find a modern visitors centre where they can learn about whisky production and enjoy tastings. The centre offers guided tours that explain the distilling process and the history of Welsh whisky. Surrounded by the scenic Brecon Beacons, the distillery provides a peaceful setting with views of the Welsh countryside. The Llandudno and Swansea distilleries also welcome visitors, each offering insights into local production and heritage.
