Lewisham DLR station

Lewisham station stands in the London Borough of Lewisham, south-east London, where the Docklands Light Railway ends its run from Bank or Stratford. It also serves as a National Rail stop on the North Kent and Hayes lines, 12.5 kilometres from London Victoria. The station opened in 1849 on the South Eastern Railway’s line to Strood, and the Mid-Kent line joined it in 1857. Electrification arrived in 1926 using the third-rail system, and the junction was remodelled in 1929 to route freight across London. A second major remodelling in 1976 expanded the station under British Rail’s Southern Region. Today it is run by Southeastern and forms a busy interchange with many buses passing through. Two serious accidents mark the site’s past: in 1857 eleven passengers died when a train ran into a stationary one, and in 1957 ninety people were killed in a collision west of the station. A plaque on the concourse remembers the 1957 victims. The modern station has four main-line platforms and two DLR platforms, with the 1857 brick building still standing behind the newer entrance. Inside, original sash windows, tiling and banisters survive behind a lowered ceiling, while platform 3 keeps its cast-iron canopy adorned with cherry motifs. The DLR extension to Lewisham opened in 1999, adding fast links to Bank and Stratford. Visitors find a symmetrical yellow-brick façade with three doors and three windows, and behind it a rare wooden clapboard building. The main hall’s corniced ceiling is hidden above a modern false ceiling, but platform 3’s canopy remains intact. The DLR concourse leads to trains every few minutes at peak times, up to twenty-two per hour to Bank. Buses fan out across south-east London, and during engineering work on the Greenwich line Thameslink trains temporarily serve Luton and Rainham. British Transport Police keep a neighbourhood base here, ensuring safe transfers between lines.
