Brookmill Road Local Nature Reserve

Brookmill Road Local Nature Reserve lies in St Johns, part of the London Borough of Lewisham. It occupies a disused railway embankment between Brookmill Road and the Lewisham to St Johns railway line. The railway closed in 1916 and the tracks were lifted in 1929. Lewisham Council bought the land in 1979 and turned it into a nature reserve with help from the local branch of the London Wildlife Trust. The site was once covered with bramble, ivy and cow parsley. Wildflowers such as yellow archangel and wood anemone have been planted across the reserve. Three small ponds add water to the habitat and a stand of stag’s-horn sumach grows beside them. The reserve was designated a local nature reserve to protect wildlife and plants in an urban area. It offers a quiet green space where people can observe nature close to the city. The entrance on Brookmill Road between Elverson Road and Albyn Road remains locked. No public access is allowed, so the reserve stays undisturbed for wildlife. Visitors can view the site from the street or nearby paths. Its small size and careful management make it a valuable spot for local biodiversity.
