Mitcham

Mitcham tram stop stands in the London Borough of Merton, where a modern tram line cuts through the old railway cutting. The stop sits between Belgrave Walk and Mitcham Junction, just east of the former Mitcham railway station which closed in 1997. Twin platforms with ramps at each end make the stop fully accessible for all passengers. Nearby, London Buses routes 45 and 280, plus night routes N44 and N133, connect the area to the wider network. A free interchange within an hour allows seamless travel between trams and buses under Transport for London’s Hopper fare. The design includes a short interlaced section where tracks share rails to fit the narrow cutting northwest of the station. This unusual arrangement allows two trams to run between Mitcham and Mitcham Junction at the same time. Overhead line equipment was installed during a three-month project that began in spring 2012, followed by 18 successful test runs. The double track opened in late June 2012, except for a single-track stretch under a road bridge due to clearance limits. Services run every ten minutes off-peak in each direction. Visitors find a straightforward stop with clear platforms and easy access. Bombardier CR4000 and Stadler Variobahn trams serve routes to Beckenham Junction, Elmers End and Wimbledon. The surroundings include the quiet cutting and nearby residential streets. Bus stops and the old railway station site add to the local transport links. The stop provides a practical way to reach central London and the wider south-west.
