Badner Bahn

The Badner Bahn is a tram-train service that links Vienna with the spa town of Baden. It runs for 30.4 kilometres through the southern suburbs of the city. Part of the route uses Vienna’s tram tunnels before emerging onto light-rail tracks. The line is owned and run by Wiener Lokalbahnen Aktiengesellschaft. In 2013 it carried about 35,000 passengers each day. The service shares tracks with Vienna’s trams as far as Schedifkaplatz, then switches to its own double-track light-rail route. Between Leesdorf and Josefsplatz in Baden it uses a short tram section. A new station at the Landesklinikum in Baden was opened in December 2014. The whole journey takes 62 minutes, even after the new stop was added. Modern low-floor trains run every 7.5 minutes during peak times. Bombardier supplied 14 class 400 units between 2000 and 2010. New class 500 Flexity trams have been introduced since 2023. Older high-floor class 100 units are gradually being withdrawn. The line now offers step-free access throughout.
