Shopping City Süd

Shopping City Süd stands on the southern edge of Vienna, straddling the towns of Vösendorf and Wiener Neudorf in Lower Austria. It is a single, sprawling building covering 235,000 square metres, making it Austria’s largest shopping mall. Over 330 shops occupy the space, supported by around 5,000 staff. The centre was deliberately built outside Vienna’s city limits to cut costs, drawing spending power into the surrounding region. In 2007 the Dutch group Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield bought the mall for €607 million, adding it to its portfolio of Austrian retail properties. More recently, Crédit Agricole Assurances took a 45 per cent stake in 2021, and the name was updated to Westfield Shopping City Süd. The mall’s size and design reflect its origins as a car-centred destination, with more than 10,000 parking spaces arranged around the building. Public transport links have grown since opening, most notably the light-rail station Vösendorf SCS on the Badner Bahn line. A free shuttle from Vienna’s Siebenhirten underground station provides another route, while regional buses connect the mall to Mödling and other nearby stations. Campaigners have long urged the extension of Vienna’s U6 metro line to the site, but for now the Badner Bahn remains the main link. The centre’s environmental efforts include a pledge to cut CO₂ emissions by 5,300 tonnes as part of the Austrian Climate Alliance. Inside, visitors find a continuous shopping street lined with familiar high-street names and larger fashion anchors. The layout is straightforward, with wide walkways and clear signage guiding shoppers between stores. Beyond retail, the mall hosts cafés and restaurants where people can pause without leaving the complex. The surrounding area is a flat, low-rise landscape of retail parks and industrial zones, giving the mall a commanding presence on the edge of the city.
