Gusen concentration camp

Gusen was a subcamp of Mauthausen concentration camp built between the villages of Sankt Georgen an der Gusen and Langestein in Upper Austria. It opened in May 1940 to exploit the granite quarries leased by the SS company DEST. Polish prisoners formed the largest group, followed by Spanish Republicans, Soviet citizens and Italians. The camp expanded into Gusen I, II and III as forced labour shifted to armaments production for Messerschmitt and Steyr-Daimler-Puch. Underground factories like Bergkristall were carved beneath the hills to assemble Me 262 jet fighter fuselages. By the war’s end nearly a thousand aircraft parts had been produced under conditions designed to kill through exhaustion. The camp’s purpose was extermination through labour, with life expectancy as low as six months in 1940 and 1941. Average prisoner weight fell to forty kilograms during the worst years, while a typhus epidemic led to mass killings of the sick. Roll calls twice daily were held on the eastern plaza of the rectangular camp, which measured 180 by 400 metres and held up to seven thousand prisoners. A stone wall two metres high and multiple barbed-wire fences enclosed the site, patrolled by guards who lived in separate barracks outside the prisoner perimeter. Watchtowers shifted from wood to granite as the SS tightened control. Today the site is a privately owned village, yet a small government-run museum marks the history. Visitors walk past the former roll-call plaza and the outline of the prisoner camp, now grassed over. The underground tunnels of Bergkristall remain beneath the hills, though sealed for safety. Nearby quarries still show the scars of forced extraction, while the villages retain memories of Austrian children passing the camp fence on their way to school. The museum preserves the names and fates of those who died, ensuring the camp’s purpose is not forgotten.
