Beinn Damh

Beinn Damh stands in the rugged Highlands between Upper Loch Torridon and Glen Carron, 25 kilometres north-east of Kyle of Lochalsh. It is a Corbett mountain reaching 903 metres, just eleven metres short of Munro status. The summit ridge stretches four kilometres with three tops and steep slopes on its eastern face. Dramatic cliffs and buttresses mark this side, while the western slopes are gentler. A striking feature is the ‘Stirrup Mark’, a semi-circular patch of white quartzite visible from the south-west. The mountain’s name means ‘Hill of the Stag’, reflecting its location in the Ben Damh deer estate. The climb begins at the Loch Torridon Hotel, following the Allt Coire Roill for over a kilometre. A 30-metre waterfall appears along the path, which then splits into two routes. The right fork leads up the easier Toll Bàn corrie, while the left fork continues to a small lochan before ascending the steep north-eastern ridge. This ridge skirts a difficult buttress and requires some scrambling. A full circuit can be made by using one route for ascent and the other for descent. The northern top, Sgurr na Bana Mhoraire, stands at 687 metres and offers fine views over Loch Torridon. The highest point lies at the southern end of the summit ridge. From here, nearby peaks such as Beinn Alligin, Liathach and the Applecross hills are clearly seen. The Glen Carron Munros and Corbetts also come into view. The mountain’s dramatic scenery and varied routes make it a rewarding challenge for walkers. The contrasting slopes and ridges provide different experiences on the same ascent. The views alone justify the journey to this remote Highland peak.
