Torridon Hills

The Torridon Hills rise steeply from the shores of Loch Torridon in the Northwest Highlands. The village of Torridon sits at the head of the loch, with Annat at the opposite end of the bay. The mountains are made of ancient sandstone and quartzite, some of the oldest rocks in Britain. Peaks like Liathach and Beinn Eighe reach over 3,000 feet and are known for their dramatic terraces and jagged ridges. These hills form part of the Torridon National Nature Reserve, covering over 5,000 hectares of wild land. The reserve includes Beinn Alligin and parts of Beinn Eighe, managed by the National Trust for Scotland since 1967. Climbers and walkers come from around the world to tackle the ridges and gullies of the Torridon Hills. The steep terraces and broken summits offer challenging scrambles with few escape routes, making them popular with experienced hillgoers. The area is also home to wildlife such as golden eagles, otters, and pine martens, alongside red deer that roam the slopes. The Torridon estate, now part of the nature reserve, supports a mix of heathland, bog, and scattered woodland. Nearby, the Celtman Extreme Triathlon tests competitors with a swim in Loch Shieldaig, a gruelling bike ride, and a run that crosses two Munros. Visitors to Torridon find a quiet village beside deep blue waters with the mountains rising sharply behind. The Torridon hotel in Annat overlooks the loch, while a youth hostel offers simpler lodging in the village. The nature reserve’s paths lead through bog and boulder fields to the lower slopes of the hills. From the shore, the peaks appear like castles, their pale quartzite summits catching the light. The contrast between the still loch and the rugged ridges makes the landscape unforgettable.
