Carnedd gron Cefn Sychbant

Carnedd gron Cefn Sychbant is a round cairn near Hirwaun in Rhondda Cynon Taf. It dates from the end of the Stone Age and the start of the Bronze Age. The site sits on a hilltop at grid reference SN983108. Its purpose was likely tied to burial rituals and religious ceremonies. Cadw has listed it as a scheduled monument under the number BR137. The builders of this cairn also raised chambered tombs and standing stones nearby. Other monuments they left include ring cairns, hill forts and Irish huts. A second round cairn stands close by at grid reference SN989101, known as GM560. Both sites show how the area was organised in prehistoric times. Visitors find a grassy mound surrounded by moorland on the edge of the Brecon Beacons. The wide views stretch across the valleys of the Rhondda and the Cynon. The cairn itself is a low, stony circle, its edges softened by centuries of weather. The second cairn lies a short walk away, adding to the sense of an ancient landscape.
