Carnedd gron Twyn Bryn Glas

A round cairn from the late Stone Age and early Bronze Age stands on the summit of Twyn Bryn Glas in Hirwaun, Rhondda Cynon Taf. The site sits at grid reference SN985116 on open moorland above the valleys. Its purpose was probably linked to burial rituals and religious ceremonies of the time. Cadw has listed the cairn as a scheduled ancient monument under reference GM561. The same Neolithic builders also raised chambered tombs, standing stones and hill forts across the region. The cairn is a simple grass-covered mound of stones arranged in a circle. No large stones mark its edge, so it blends quietly into the surrounding heather. Its modest size and plain shape contrast with the more elaborate ring cairns nearby. Yet its age and purpose give it quiet significance in the landscape. The site remains undisturbed, with no modern additions or repairs. Visitors reach the cairn by following a path across the moor from Hirwaun. The final climb is gentle but steady, leading to wide views over the valleys below. The air is often fresh and clear, carrying the scent of heather and peat. The cairn itself is small enough to walk around in a few minutes. Standing there, the sense of ancient ritual lingers without any need for grand statements.
