Black Spout

Black Spout is a waterfall in East Dunbartonshire, near the southern edge of the Highlands. It sits where a steep burn drops into a narrow gorge, surrounded by heather moorland and scattered birch trees. The fall is short but dramatic, with water plunging over a rocky lip into a deep plunge pool below. Its name follows the local pattern of using ‘spout’ for falls where water is forced through a narrow chute. The site lies close to the village of Drymen, within easy reach of the A81 road. The fall is one of many in Scotland where the combination of hard rock and heavy rainfall creates ideal conditions for waterfalls. It is recognised in local listings of named falls, though not among the highest in the country. Its modest size makes it more accessible than towering Highland cascades, yet it still shows the power of upland streams. Walkers often pass by on routes that link Drymen with the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. Visitors find a quiet spot where the sound of water fills the small glen. A rough path leads down to the base of the fall, where moss-covered boulders frame the pool. The surrounding woodland is home to red squirrels and a variety of upland birds. From the viewpoint above, the fall appears as a silver thread against the dark rock. The air carries the scent of damp earth and pine.
